case study #1: shipo

What We Built and Why It Worked

SHIPO has spent more than two decades doing work that’s easy to respect and hard to explain quickly; boreholes, rope pumps, school latrines, climate adaptation training, agriculture support, all delivered village by village across the Southern Highlands. The problem wasn’t credibility. It was translation: a donor, government partner, or new funder landing on the old site had no fast way to understand the scope of what SHIPO does or why it’s been trusted by partners like WaterAid, SNV, and Water Right for over twenty years.

We rebuilt SHIPO’s digital presence around a simple idea: a funder deciding whether to trust an organization with their money makes that judgment in the first few seconds. So the new site leads with clarity; what SHIPO does, who it serves, and proof that it’s been doing it responsibly for a long time before it asks anything of the visitor.

Using a StoryBrand-informed structure, we organized the site around SHIPO’s core program areas (WASH, Education, Agriculture & Irrigation, and Climate Action) so a partner interested in one area doesn’t have to dig through the rest to find relevant proof of work. Alongside the rebuild, we set up an ongoing communications strategy and social media management, so SHIPO’s field work – a new borehole, a training session, a school handover, gets shared as it happens, not just in an annual report.

SHIPO, who are they?

SHIPO is a Tanzanian NGO based in Njombe, operating across mainland Tanzania since 2001. It specializes in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), education, agriculture and irrigation, and climate action, working directly with rural communities and a long list of institutional partners.

What was the challenge?

SHIPO’s actual track record spanning decades of fieldwork, a wide partner network, a specialized unit (the SMART Centre) supporting local entrepreneurs, wasn’t reflected in how the organization presented itself online. The site was difficult for a first-time visitor to navigate, and there was no consistent social media presence to keep partners and prospective donors updated between formal reports.

How did Azieni help?

We applied StoryBrand messaging to put the communities SHIPO serves at the center of the story, with SHIPO positioned as the experienced guide. The site architecture was rebuilt around program areas so it could double as a resource for grant applications and partner due diligence, not just a brochure. We paired the rebuild with a standing communications plan: regular social posts documenting active projects, and a consistent visual identity across the website and every social channel.

What are the deliverables?

  1. A restructured, mobile-friendly website organized by program area (WASH, Education, Agriculture & Irrigation, Climate Action)
  2. A dedicated partners & funders section highlighting SHIPO’s institutional relationships and history
  3. Bilingual (Swahili/English) content structure for local and international audiences
  4. Ongoing social media management documenting field projects as they happen
  5. A consistent visual and messaging identity across the website and every social channel
