Try this right now: open Google and search for your own business by name. Did it show up? Now search for what you actually do, “salon Mwanza” or “accountant Dar es Salaam” or “furniture shop Arusha.” Are you anywhere on that first page?

If the honest answer is “no” or “I’m not sure, let me check”, don’t panic. This is normal. Most businesses in Tanzania are invisible on Google, not because their business is bad, but because nobody ever told them Google needs to be fed information, not just assumed to know you exist.

Google is not psychic

Here’s the thing people get wrong: Google doesn’t know your shop exists just because you exist. It only knows what’s been told to it; through your website, your Google Business Profile, and how other pages online talk about you. If none of that exists, you’re invisible, no matter how good your maandazi are.

The five things actually killing your visibility
  1. No Google Business Profile; This is the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps with hours, photos, and reviews. So many Tanzanian businesses skip this entirely, and it’s often the single fastest way to show up when someone searches nearby.
  2. Your website loads like it’s on a daladala stuck in Dar traffic; If your site takes ten seconds to open on a normal Tanzanian phone connection, most visitors leave before it even finishes loading, and Google notices that too. Slow sites get buried.
  3. Nobody wrote down what you actually do; This sounds obvious, but we see it constantly: a website with a beautiful logo and zero actual words describing the business. Google (and your customers) can’t guess. If you sell wedding cakes in Dodoma, the words “wedding cakes” and “Dodoma” need to actually appear on your site, not just live in your head.
  4. No reviews, or worse, ignored bad ones; Google pays attention to reviews, and so does everyone deciding whether to trust you. A business with twelve reviews and thoughtful replies beats a business with zero reviews every time, even if the zero-review business is objectively better.
  5. You’re only on Instagram; Instagram is great, but it’s a walled garden, Google can’t see most of what’s inside it the way it sees your actual website. If your entire online presence lives on social media, you’re invisible the moment someone searches Google instead of scrolling their feed.
A quick story

Two mechanics, both in Mbeya, both genuinely good at their job. One has a simple website that says “Mbeya car mechanic, engine repair, specializes in Toyota and Isuzu” with his address and a Google Business Profile. The other has no website, just a shop sign and word of mouth.

Guess who shows up when someone new to Mbeya searches for “mechanic near me”? It’s not about who’s better with an engine, it’s about who Google can actually find.

This isn’t a one-time fix

Here’s the part most people don’t want to hear: getting found on Google isn’t something you do once and forget. Google constantly re-evaluates who deserves to be shown, new competitors show up, your information can go stale, and what worked last year quietly stops working. It needs someone actually watching it.
